I have had folks asking me for a long time wether I offered plans that they could use to program their CNC machines to cut a kit or forms. I kept putting folks off because I have been concerned about the files getting out "in the wild" where they could be shared by others.
I earn my living in part through the sale of my boat designs. The easiest way to protect my intellectual property has always been to only offer the plans as hard copy printed plans on paper. The large format paper used for the drawings by no means stops people from making copies, but it does slow down the process of sharing the information.
After a lot of deliberation, I have decided to trust folks. While there are some people who may not understand the effort I have put into these designs, I think most of my customers will continue to support me and not give away the plans.
Earlier this year I dipped my toe in the waters of offering my plans as PDF files that people can download and print themselves. The PDF files include all the information needed to create the parts needed to build the boat. While it is possible to run the PDFs through CAM software and create Cut Files for a CNC machine, it is not always straightforward.
To make it easier for folks with access to a CNC machine I am making DXF files available of the cut file information for select designs. These should be make programming your CNC machine quite easy.
