The WoodenBoat Show at Mystic Seaport

Event Date

Every year, I join Chesapeake Light Craft at the WoodenBoat Show in Mystic, CT. This is a fun chance to meet people face to face and talk about building boats. I usually am at work demonstrating some aspect of strip-planked or stitch-and-glue construction. CLC brings up a trailer full of boats, and since Mystic Seaport is just around the corner from where I live, I generally bring a selection as well.

The WoodenBoat Show, hosted in partnership with WoodenBoat Publications, showcases over 100 traditional and classic wooden boats, from hand-crafted kayaks to mahogany runabouts, classic daysailers, and schooners.

Visitors can also outfit their watercraft and learn new skills through demonstrations and workshops. Exhibitors offer maritime art, antiques, tools, books, and nautical gear.

Mystic Seaport staff and guest experts demonstrate boat-building skills, including wood-epoxy boat building, caulking, laminating wood, adze use, and boat building.

A popular feature includes the “I Built It Myself” display of home-built boats.

Visitors can also row or sail small boats at the Museum’s boat livery or participate in the John Gardner Small Craft Workshop.

Museum admission includes access to The WoodenBoat Show and Mystic Seaport. Three-day passes are available.

Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online at mysticseaport.org/tickets.
