at noon on second day. Hull is composite panels and deck is 3mm ocume ply. Construction is very fast and easy. weighs 22 lbs 2 oz. needs deck glassed and coming installed.

Petrel built from eastern "aromatic" cedar, cypress, oak, & walnut. Took 7 months to build on back porch. Really fun in the water.

now I'm building a Strip planked Guillemot

Built two boats in tandem, working on the Expedition first then applying what I learned to the Night Heron. Both boats track pretty straight but in my opinion both should have either a skeg or rudder. The Night Heron especially, as it has more of the boat out of the water and getting hit by wind. All the hatches are rare earth magnets and I have rolled both boats fully loaded and sprayed a hose at them without any leaks! I get so many compliments about these boats, Nick you are a genius!

Eleven weeks ago I ordered my planes, they came two days later. Before I had time to enlarge my 8'x12' shed to 8'x20'.This is my first boat and your book was a great help.
The wood I used was western red cedar and spruce to which I milled the cove and bead myself. I used some red oak for the stems and plan on using it around the coaming lip. I am waiting on the UPS man for the glass cloth. I cant wait to get this in the ocean, I live on the Outer Banks a Kayakers paradise. Will send finished photos soon.

Launch day May 2010. All western red cedar. My first build, a winter project turned into two. Thanks to Nick for the great Great Auk plans.

I built this nice boat in one week and am very happy with the design this is the first kayak I have used and after building I have gone paddling every chance I get 20 times in the last month. the last pic is from Lake Michigan just before a aircraft style move, a barrel roll. I'll have to figure out how to get control someday. The finished boat with tractor seat and office chair back and home built carbon paddle is 34 pounds. the paddle has solid carbon paddles and foam core handle took a couple days and weighs 26 ozs.

I though I would share my first build. It still requires a lot of finishing, hatches, outfitting, etc but I wanted to get it in the water before it got cold around here. Overall the build went extremely well. I got "The Book" and followed it for the most part. I also have found that I am not a craftsman. More of a get it done and that will work sort of builder. In fact from the day I bought the book till the day I put it in the water was 6 weeks working a long Labor Day weekend and nights/weekends. Overall I am extremely pleased! Jim

In the Setting up Forms video, one end of the aluminum is tapered on one end. Is there a reason for that?

I've really enjoyed building my kayak from start to finish. I took my two daughters out to try it and we had a lot of fun together. It's fun trying a new hobby, and it was a good bonding experience for my girls and me. After perfecting my kayak, it makes me want to build another one. I really enjoyed trying out a new sport and continue to fufill it in the future.

What to do with all of your spare strips ? I made a Yakima/Thule style roof box for my kayaking equipment and skis. I also made a spoiler. When I put my expedition single or guillomot beside it on the roof it should look great.

I used the wood from a lightning hit Atlantic White Cedar. I milled the wood and cut the strips on a table saw, then built the Guillemot exclusively from this tree. I raced it once in a 2 mile race and won in my category, over 13 ft.35yrs.of age or over etc. It gets alot of compliments. I'm almost finished my 2nd Gil as we speak. It has alot of black walnut in it! It'll be tricked out with hand painted life size Guillemots.

This kayak was made from one lightning hit white cedar. I'm finishing up another kayak now with alot of curved walnut and dark red cedar strips in it, along with the remainder of the white cedar. Do I hear MUSEUM PIECE! It'll be tricked out with a dozen hand painted Guillemots. It's so stunning, I can't even believe my brother and I are building it. Pics up soon. Nick sure designs unbelieveble kayaks,and since the forms are already up, I'll just continue to build the Guillemots, although I'd like to eventually build an Expedition or Mystery. I just finished my second kayak for my musically inclined wife. It has a two meter treble cleff on the deck. The red wood was used first and then I filled in the tan wood around it. It was a good challenge.
I live in Indonesia where I work as a pilot for a non profit organization. The far boat is a common boat seen on the lake, the middle kayak is the new one for my wife, and the close kayak is the first one I built 4 years ago.

Beautiful addition to my living room during this cold winter. As seen, I kept it simple. Used Western Red Cedar and tried to include as many strong knots as possible, built without staples. Need spring to hurry!

This is my first wooden kayak. I built it from Nick's plans 14' Great Auk. I had great fun building the kayak and made plenty of mistakes (some you can see). I am hooked on building kayaks!! I plan on using the kayak on lakes, creeks and rivers in Pennsylvania. Thanks Nick LouG

Finished!! (well, except for varnish). Came together very well - no hassles with the nose and no twisting. The artwork is crepe paper under the glass. I wonder what the sun will do to it!

Completed project; had to clean out the workshop, and so stopped to snap a photo. A little cold for trying it out at that time yet.

Launching day of my first build. not the best day for a launching, 44 degrees, 25mph winds and cold water! but I was really happy with the Auk. It seemed to do just fine.
